Thanks for dropping in! This website contains a lot of information about me (Andrew Scott), the various things that I do and the many things for which I act as an advocate.

I believe in doing many things and getting them done. A simple mission statement perhaps, but one that has helped me focus my diverse efforts and get them out the door.

Jews Who Rock
In the late 1950s and early 1960s, much of the rock and roll songbook was written/produced in The Brill Building (New York) by a bunch of Jewish teenagers who were not that much older than the audiences for whom they were writing. This talk looks at the contributions of Phil Spector, Burt Baccarach, Carol King, Neil Sedaka, Cynthia Weil, Gerry Goffin, and others.

Nostalgia, Andrew Scott, guitar.

The title of this CD does not refer to a trip back in time. Hardly. Instead, our “Nostalgia” is the name Fats Navarro gave to his bop changes on the chords to “Out of Nowhere.” So this is nostalgia in name only because this music is pure, joyous timeless fun. Once again, Scott scores a fine effort for Sackville Records with music that has a pulse. Scott’s quartet brings in a couple of guests in Jon Erik Kelso, trumpet, and Dan Block, tenor clarinet. They lead off with a totally relaxed groove on Ben Webster’s “Did You Call Her Today,” a reworking of “Rose Room” and “In a Mellow Tone.” As a matter of fact, all of the sextet’s choices are restructured gems. To name a few, there’s “On a Misty Night” (“September in the Rain”); “Hot House” (“What Is this Thing Called Love”); “Quasimodo” (“Embraceable You”) and lots more. Let me simply say that we need more recordings like this, because what Scott and company gives us is the real deal. Like the orange juice in that commercial, this music is “un-fooled around with.” I wish there were more guys doing it just this way.

Nostalgia

The bebop era saw the extended use of standard popular songs as the basis for new compositions based on the chord changes of the familiar themes.
“Nostalgia” takes this as its basic premise with a programme of compositions by musician/composers such as Tadd Dameron, Barney Kessel, Fats Navarro, Charlie Parker, Gigi Gryce, Zaid Nasser and one by leader Andrew Scott and Jake Wilkinson. Having said that, the first selection is Ben Webster’s Did You Call Her Today, his swing style variation on Rose Room, but for the rest of the album it’s bebop lines over familiar standard harmonies. If you are a jazz buff, see how many you can get right before looking at the liner notes!
Pianist Mark Eisenman, bassist Pat Collins and drummer Joel Haynes integrate beautifully and Mark contributes some outstanding solos, while Andrew Scott is equally comfortable playing unison lines, comping or stretching out on a solo.
Trumpeter Jon-Erik Kellso and clarinettist Dan Block, although of a later generation, have chosen to follow in the steps of the great early innovators and both play with lyrical concept, creative ideas and the playing skills to make it all come together. As John Norris rightly states in his accompanying notes, they are indeed real jazz musicians. This CD is a welcome addition and upholds the well earned stellar reputation of Sackville Records.

Jake Wilkinson (Trumpet):

Born in 1971 to a musical family, Jake Wilkinson began playing the trombone at the age of nine. Although he has studied a variety of musical instruments for the past ten years he has focused on the trumpet, making his name in North America as a distinctive soloist and bandleader. Music critics and audiences alike have been impressed by his technical brilliance and strong personal style in performances at major jazz venues and festivals around the world. Jake has been recorded on over eight CDs and on radio and television shows for CBC, CJRT and Bravo! Jake studied in New York City on a scholarship at the New School of Music and with support from the Canada Council. He has worked with jazz greats like Rob McConnell, John Hicks, Don Thompson and Bob Mover. Jake currently lives and works in Toronto, Canada.

Andrew Scott (Guitar):

Toronto native and Sackville recording artist Andrew Scott has become the standard bearer for the next generation of great Canadian jazz musicians. His many accomplishments include graduating from York University with a PhD in Musicology/Ethnomusicology, but there is nothing academic about the way Andrew plays the guitar. His “clean, boppish style” (Geoff Chapman, Toronto Star) has found him compared to everyone from Barney Kessel to Wes Montgomery. His fans include listeners the world over, including legendary musicians Sonny Greenwich, Gene DiNovi and George Benson.

Pat Collins (Bass):

Pat Collins was raised in Qualicum Beach, B.C. Since moving to Toronto in 1988, Pat has performed with such great musicians as Oscar Peterson, Dizzy Gillespie, Joe Henderson, Herb Ellis, Lee Konitz, Jimmy Cobb, Ed Bickert, Rob McConnell, Moe Koffman, Oliver Jones, Peter Appleyard, Diana Krall, Don Thompson, and many others. He has appeared as a sideman on approximately fifty recordings.

Collins’s own CD (“In The Moment”) features some of Canada’s premier jazz musicians—Mike Murley, Reg Schwager and Barry Elmes. The record received rave reviews, including “In The Moment is a CD that’s very easy to like,” (Richard Bourcier, JazzReview.com), and “This is a classy contribution to the jazz canon,” (Geoff Chapman, Toronto Star). The Pat Collins Quartet was nominated for a 2005 National Jazz Award as “Acoustic Group of the Year,” “Album of the Year” in 2006, and Pat was nominated as “Acoustic Bassist of the Year” in 2005 and 2006.

Joel Haynes (Drums):

Joel Haynes is an emerging, dynamic drummer on the Canadian jazz scene. Since the age of 7, he has been playing and studying the drums with absolute dedication and determination. Joel has grown from his early community musical experiences in his hometowns of Hamilton and Burlington, Ontario, and has progressed to playing with some of the finest jazz artists in Canada. Highlights include being nominated for a “National Jazz Award” in 2003, and being invited to perform with Oscar Peterson and Dave Young for the Toronto Tsunami Relief Benefit in January, 2005.

Many influences have formed Joel’s musical styling. His jazz studies at Humber College, McGill University, and the University of Toronto have given him a broad base of skills and knowledge which have shaped him into a highly technical, defined, inventive and diverse musician. Instructors in Montreal and Toronto include: Andre White, Dave Laing, Chris McCann, Bob McClaren, Don Vickory, and Barry Elmes.

During and following his educational experiences, Joel has performed at many major jazz festivals in North America, South America, The Caribbean, and Europe. While in Ontario, he has played with many outstanding jazz artists, such as: Ray Anderson, Rob McConnell, Sam Noto, Dave Young, P.J. Perry, Cornelius Dupré, Don Thompson, Neil Swainson, Jim Vivian, Bernie Senensky, David Braid, Steve Koven, Andrew Scott, Billy Robinson, and Verve recording artist, Denzal Sinclaire. While Joel is admired for his skills within the jazz idiom, his diversity and excellent reading skills has enabled him to perform for popular musical theatrical shows such as: Cats, Urinetown, The Rat Pack, and West Side Story. Additional tours include an upcoming project with Darren Sigesmund’s Quintet with David Braid, touring Hong Kong, Tokyo, Shanghi, and various cities in Korea.

Canadian Jazz Guitar Summit

The Canadian Jazz Guitar Summit brings together the guitar talents of Reg Schwager and Andrew Scott. Backed by one of the finest rhythm sections in jazz (Pat Collins—bass and Barry Elmes—drums), the summit swings on strings through bossas, bebop, ballads and blues.

Reg Schwager (Guitar):

Reg Schwager is one of Canada’s leading jazz guitarists. His reputation has led to him performing with internationally acclaimed jazz artists such as Mel Tormé, Pepper Adams, Hank Jones, Junior Mance, Jimmy McGriff and Zoot Sims, and such celebrated Canadian jazz musicians as Diana Krall, Rob McConnell, Peter Appleyard, Oliver Jones, Dave Young and Don Thompson. Highlights include television, concert and club performances in the US, Japan and the Bahamas with master jazz pianist George Shearing.
Reg has been the recipient of the Guitarist of the Year award from Canada’s National Jazz Awards for three consecutive years (2005, 2006 and 2007). He appears on over 90 commercially released recordings with such artists as Junior Mance, Gary Burton, George Shearing and Mel Tormé. Recordings released under his own name include Resonance, Border Town and Live at Mezzetta.

Barry Elmes (Drums):

International performer, drummer, composer, record producer, educator and multi-award winning Barry Elmes is a mainstay of the Canadian jazz scene. His work has been documented on over 60 jazz CDs and he has performed and/or recorded with many renowned jazz artists including: Tommy Flanagan, Charlie Haden, Hank Crawford, Diana Krall, Joe Henderson, John Abercrombie, Oliver Jones, Cedar Walton, Phil Nimmons, Dizzy Gillespie and the Moe Koffman Quintet.

In 1991 he formed the Barry Elmes Quintet, featuring a “who’s who” of the best in Canadian jazz. A success from the beginning, this group has released four notable recordings, the first of which, the critically acclaimed Climbing, featured Barry’s own compositions and received a Juno nomination for Best Jazz Recording. The most recent CD The Five Minute Warning received an Indie Award nomination for Best Jazz Recording 2001. The Barry Elmes Quintet won Acoustic Jazz Group of the Year at the 2002 National Jazz Awards and Time Warp’s latest release Warp IX won the 2003 Indie Award for Best Jazz Recording.

Barry is a professor of music at York University and is currently Chair of the Music Department.
